Happy April Challenge: Day 5

Day 5: Favorite Musician!

Ugh. This is like the million-dollar question. I have far, far too many favorite artists, but if I MUST narrow it down… I’ll pick two (sorry, is that bending the rules of this challenge at all?). Don’t worry, the rest of my faves will get an honorable mention at the end. I’m a huge music gal.

Artist #1, Mumford & Sons.

Yes, this Folk Rock band, leaded by singer Marcus Mumford, has become what you’d call “mainstream”. But I loved them in 2008 when they first formed and went hard on the banjo, and I love them now as they shift to a more rock sound in their newest album, Wilder Mind, which includes plentiful electric guitar with lack of their signature twang. But hey, I say artists have to change up their sound to stay relevant! Or as the saying goes, “to beguile the times, look like the times” (Comment below and tell me who said this, and you’ll be awarded 100,000,000 College Kid Brownie Points. And I’ll appreciate you forever. Oh, and Googling it doesn’t count).

I love Mumford & Sons simply for their jubilant energy and profound lyrical content. Anyone who says they hate this band is most likely not in touch with their own emotions, or hasn’t truly listened to the words and deep meaning that is interweaved within them. I think everyone can take something away from at least one Mumford & Sons song. My favorite will always be “Lover of the Light”. Its music video dances with the notion that simply being alive is a wondrous miracle, and the nature on this earth can free us from the confusion and darkness we often suffer. Check it out.

Top 5 Favorite Songs:

  1. “Lover of the Light”, Babel
  2. “Hopeless Wanderer”, Babel
  3. “Holland Road”, Babel
  4. “Wilder Mind”, Wilder Mind
  5. “The Cave”, Sigh No More

Artist #2, Bon Iver.

Bon Iver is led by singer, producer, and songwriter Justin Vernon. Bon Iver intensifies the human imagination; he plays upon forgotten feelings of nostalgia, or creates nostalgia from nothing; he invokes stirrings of the soul in all its color and depth. The vocals drift in and out of track, the instruments hang and start at sporadic moments, then the combination of the two float into your ears and, like a cloud, encircle your mind until you forget whether you’re awake or dreaming.

Bon Iver is absolutely not for everyone, and the sound of his voice and unique electronic sounds are definitely an acquired taste. But I have come to cherish the artwork that is Bon Iver’s music, and realize that he provides listeners with an almost transcendent experience, an ability to walk with your own life story as you walk with his. My favorite artistic depiction of his music is the music video for “Holocene”. These sublime images of a young child embracing the massive scenes of nature as his home reminds me of Wordsworth’s poem “Nutting”.

Top 5 Favorite Songs:

  1. “Holocene”, Bon Iver
  2. “Michicant”, Bon Iver
  3. “For Emma, Forever Ago”, For Emma, Forever Ago
  4. “Blood Bank”, Bon Iver
  5. “Towers”, Bon Iver

I really enjoyed this post and the writing style. The post caught my attention because I have an interest in similar music genres. I also really like Bon Iver and Mumford & Sons as well. This post truly describes how the music is and how it makes you feel. Its great music and not many people have listened to it but I would recommend it because the songs are sung with a lot of passion and heart, plus the instruments used, all sound great. Check out the post and listen to the songs!
